Welcome to IndyRockets

This site was created as a resource for anyone interested in hobby rocketry in central Indiana.

This is also the source for information on the Rocketeers Of Central Indiana (ROCI), Section #625 of The National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Feel free to check here for information about ROCIs launch events. The launch events are conducted throughout the warmer months at the Academy of Model Aeronautics' Headquarters and Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. This facility is the finest flying field in the state and ROCI is proud to be the exclusive host of the rocketry events held there. ROCI is not currently conducting meetings as we have lost our meeting place.

Midwest Power and Michiana Mayhem HP Launches 3 months 2 weeks ago #3066

I am planning on attending both events and will be driving up. If anyone wants to go and is willing to split gas costs, go ahead and post. I will be taking the Subaru to both events, means "some" room and a roof rack, weather permitting. I have never seen a level 3 launch live and there should be a bunch.

Midwest Power is Oct 30-Nov 1
Michiana Mayhem is Nov 13-15

Midwest Power and Michiana Mayhem HP Launches 3 months 2 days ago #3087

Update: booked a room at the Fairfield Inn Peru, IL for 84.00 a night (am a Marriott rewards member from my field service days). 84.00 a night through the Halloween weekend for Midwest Power.
I would be more than glad to book someone else a room at the member rate. It isn't the HQ hotel but I think that is full. After 7 years of 10 months per year travel +, they are the only chain I trust.

Robert's Trip Report - Midwest Power 18 2 months 2 weeks ago #3104

Friday weather was perfect - almost no wind. QCRS and Wildman set up two full ranges left and right and a 1500'+ away cell for the really big launches. With the amount of people flying, they would launch one side, load the other side, etc. Lots of birds flew Friday - probably 10K+ worth of APCP not counting the N and O launches at the Away Cell. Got to see several X launches including a 2 stage sugar propellant rocket that was a true skybuster. Sugar rockets leave a bright white contrail and sound like a giant Estes D engine.
I got a true good flight out of my Renegade upscale - perfect straight up to 1750 feet, perfect apogee deployment, and landing in a PICKED and plowed cornfield, like landing on a dirt pillow. Not a scratch. Flew the Zuke on another G125T and I think it's next flight will be on an H115DM.
I also got smallest motor of the launch with Starlight Zippy and an A10-3T Friday and A3-4T Saturday.

Thermals were ginormous over the fields. I flew Renegade on a 42" Top-Flite X-Form and it took 2 1/2 minutes to land, lots of stairstep action on the way down. Its a 3 pound rocket so kind of surprised. I down-chuted the Zucchini to a 24 from a 30, and it did the same, long slow recovery.
Their field is crazy wide open - see attached pics. Also a couple of some of the larger launches. They are board limited to 100K so they are low-res. Will upload the Away Cell launches to Google drive and post a link sometime today.

Saturday started to get pretty windy, the night launch and Sunday were scrubbed due to high winds.

Note: no one there uses dog barf - just Nomex burritos so I didn't fly the Magg or MDRM. Did put the Star Orbiter in orbit and successfully recovered it though! If you go and use dog barf, BYO.

How about organizing in advance some field trips to some of the larger HP launches in the area next year? Item for club discussion - since we now have 2 trailers, there is plenty of room for rocketry stowage on a trip. Advance planning could secure lower hotel rates and it provides a locale for Level 3 qualification. It also gets the club back in the mix...without rockets in the back, I could sleep in my car!

Midwest power is an app. 275 mile drive from central IN, not too bad.
Michiana Mayhem in Three Oaks, MI right near the Indiana border - not a long drive. Just up past South Bend a bit.
Probably some other close events I don't know about too.

I will be attending Michiana Mayhem and so will miss the November Sport launch : ( would like to attend both. Also want to get some close up on the higher L2 and L3 projects at these launches. Good experience and more fun to see than to read about.

Mario: you could break out that 3X Interceptor and sport it!
