Welcome to IndyRockets

This site was created as a resource for anyone interested in hobby rocketry in central Indiana.

This is also the source for information on the Rocketeers Of Central Indiana (ROCI), Section #625 of The National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Feel free to check here for information about ROCIs launch events. The launch events are conducted throughout the warmer months at the Academy of Model Aeronautics' Headquarters and Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. This facility is the finest flying field in the state and ROCI is proud to be the exclusive host of the rocketry events held there. ROCI is not currently conducting meetings as we have lost our meeting place.

Per Zoom Meeting, a project and goal thread for Boarders - I made it 2021 since 2020 needs a redo.

Mine are:

1.) 100% reliability with Jolly Logic Chute Release (JLCR) - suggestions and tips welcome here. Hair scrunchies instead of rubber bands is a good start, and heavier, non-abrasive tether material also.

2.) Start dual deployment and get to no mistakes - required for L3 cert, though that's a goal for 2022 maybe.

3.) Start using GPS to prevent Korn Loss.

4.) Shift to fiberglass for HPR's, may be a little more asphalt rash proof : )

My big project for 2021 will be a 2-stager. I've started the project and since I typically overbuild, that will come in handy since I want to keep it under 6,000'. From the sims I've done, it can be easy to exceed our waiver which I won't do. I also don't like loosing sight of the rocket. I first thought I would retro one of my 4" rockets to handle a booster stage, but when you take a heavy rocket, you need a lot of power and when staged, it goes too high via sim. So I'm going with a much smaller rocket. I needed a more powerful controller, so I think I have successfully built an Eggtimer Proton flight computer....at least it lights Christmas bulbs correctly. I've been working on the electronics and bays first. There are many issues to deal with in safely and successfully flying a 2 stage AP setup. That'll keep me busy.

Allan, can you doc the build? I have a Nike Hercules 2 stage MP kit that requires an air-start / electronic staging. Haven't started it yet. Not asking for all fillets and such, just the electronic setup, minimizing weight, electronics location, etc.

Robert, sure I'll share info. For now I plan to use an Eggtimer Proton for the sustainer. It has 6 channels. One for the separation charge, one for the igniter, then one for the deployment. I was thinking of using my RRC3, as the AUX could do the upper stage ignition as it has some safety 'interlocks' but wouldn't do a separation charge. Also, I'm putting one of my Eggfinder GPS units in the upper stage. For the booster, I'm planning to use either a RRC2+ to fire a charge for the parachute and/or an Eggfinder Apogee unit (which I haven't built yet.) I may use motor eject as a backup for the booster. I wanted to do DD for the sustainer, but will probably go with just a JL chute release as the wiring will be simpler. I have been brainstorming a lot with myself to ask all of the what if's for a safety and building order scheme.

My main goal is simply to try and be able to participate more (and get a check to Gary for dues to be an official member again). The Zoom meetings will help with that. We're planning to organize our basement this weekend (when we moved in this summer, stuff just kind of got thrown down there to be kept out of the way), and I'm hopeful that in the process I can set up a bit of work space for building again. I have some ideas floating around my head for more Starbucks builds, and I'd like to get a couple of those done. Related to that, I have yet to get the Plumber's Helper two-stage (the Number 2) to go up without a little wobble. So I'll add improving that build to my list. And finally, many of my rockets have sat in storage for quite a long time. I'm sure there are some that need some work and there are a few with the good old Estes rubber band shock cords that probably need replaced.

Seems like small goals, compared to what others listed, but I'll be happy if I can get them done.
