Welcome to IndyRockets

This site was created as a resource for anyone interested in hobby rocketry in central Indiana.

This is also the source for information on the Rocketeers Of Central Indiana (ROCI), Section #625 of The National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Feel free to check here for information about ROCIs launch events. The launch events are conducted throughout the warmer months at the Academy of Model Aeronautics' Headquarters and Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. This facility is the finest flying field in the state and ROCI is proud to be the exclusive host of the rocketry events held there. ROCI is not currently conducting meetings as we have lost our meeting place.

You mean that once you idiot-proof the design, someone builds a better idiot. :)

Today's update:

1. The circuit logic for launching seems to work well. At least it works as far as I can test it.
2. the current circuit board needs heavier traces in the 12v section. I was hoping these boards would work as is but they will need to be revised.
3. I got the first set at a discount (50%) so we were saving money over my estimate, as I mentioned.
4. Obviously, the new boards won't be free so that pushes us above my estimate.
5. I convinced them to give us another discount so we're back to my original estimate.

I can't fire ignitors until I can get a high current version of the board in to test which will be about a week.

One other thing to consider. We might want to go to the next size larger box for these things. The current one is very tight but the electronics and battery do fit. A larger box would allow us to have space to store the cables that go with each box and would be far better than tossing them all in one box and having them get tangled and broken at each launch. The larger box would add $15.00. To offset this, I have found a source for one of the devices being used that reduces its cost by almost $10.00 per box so it's almost a wash. You guys make the call.

Given the total expense, it seems penny-wise, pound-foolish to cheap out on the boxes, esp. if we get better storage. That extra money gets eaten quickly when wire sets have to be replaced. We have to think about storage as well as use to get longer service life out of our investment.

OK, time for another update. The design of the insert for the larger box is almost done. It will have a removable electronics panel that can be easily replaced. That way we only have to have a spare or two of the panel and not the entire box. That’s a pretty good savings. Also, i’ve Picked up some buck converters to allow us to power the pads and the electronics off the single 12v battery. Prior to this the electronics had a separate, kind of pricey battery of its own. Another good bit of savings.

A couple of milestones in the last two days. Yesterday I fired the first igniter remotely. It was great to see that but there were problems that prevented all the pads from working. Today I built the electronics for the first fully functional board. All ports have been used to fire igniters. I could use a buttload of igniters for testing...

Oh, and continuity works, too!

Mario I found 6 packs of Estes Pro Series 2 igniters you can have. Each pack has 4 igniters in them. I live on the south east side of Indy in Franklin Twnsp. Let me know and I can meet up with you.
